Borras at the IWM Duxford

Borras have recently set up site at the IWM Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

The aerodrome at Duxford was built during the First World War and was one of the earliest Royal Air Force stations; the airfield went on to play a vital role in Britain’s air defence during the Battle of Britain in 1940 and remained in operation by the RAF until 1961.

In 1977 Cambridgeshire County Council with the Imperial War Museum and the Duxford Aviation Society bought the site to give the abandoned aerodrome a new lease of life. Today IWM Duxford is an established centre of aviation history boasting world-renowned air shows and almost 200 aircraft and military exhibits.

The £840,000 project Borras are carrying out involves works to the American Air Museum, a hangar on site that is home to the largest collection of US historic military aircraft in Europe.

Specifically the project involves the removal, storage and reinstatement of the entire glazing system including steel mullions to the front of the American Air Museum. Following the removal of the curtain walling a specialist contractor will be employed to remove all suspended and standing exhibition aircraft in preparation for the next phase of the works, the repainting of the exhibition floor before the final reinstatement of the glazing.

The contract is being carried out by our General Contracts division and is anticipated to last 33 weeks.
