Borras support Verulam School’s Business Enterprise Conference
Borras are proud to have once again attended Verulam School’s annual Business Enterprise Week, an event we have been supporting for over 10 years now.
The aim of the week is to develop skills like problem solving and team building, through a programme of demanding, challenging and entertaining group activities, hosted by representatives from local businesses. It also provides an opportunity for students to interact with people from a range of industries and local services, so that they can become more informed about the ‘world of work’.
Borras enjoy a long standing relationship with Verulam School following the successful delivery of several construction projects over the last 10 years, including the £670k conversion of their existing gymnasium into a new Sixth From Block.
Contracts Manager, Alex Simpson and Site Manager, Vince Clerkin represented Borras across the two dates, hosting 6 sessions of year 9 students in total. The groups of 20 were tasked with designing and constructing a lighthouse, with working bulb using only the craft materials provided. All participants were assigned roles (e.g. Project Manager) and given strict guidelines as to how the lighthouse should look when completed. It is hoped the exercises provided the pupils with some level of insight into the construction industry and the various career’s it has to offer.
Tuesday’s winning team with their build. Alex Simpson commented “they managed to involve everyone, the structure I think reflects this, excellent team working!”
The week was a fantastic success with Dan Ansley (Verulam Head of Year 9) praising that “the feedback from students this year was extremely positive. They were thrilled with the variety of activities and clearly benefited enormously from the experience”.
The daily communication from the Site Manager was excellent and we were always aware what stage the build was up to and what if any disruption we faced. I would have no issues in using Borras Construction again in any other large projects.
