Welwyn Hatfield Council Chamber

Welwyn, Hertfordshire

CLIENT: Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council
ARCHITECT: RPS & Robert Noble Associates
QUANTITY SURVEYOR: Anthony J Silver and Associates
VALUE: £585,000
CONTRACT PERIOD: 17 Weeks

This project involved the creation and fit out of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s first ever purpose built Council Chamber.

The space for the chamber was created when a separate contractor complete a three storey infill extension at the existing council offices in 2015. This contractor was however unable to complete the project, allowing Borras to successfully tender for the works to transform the empty shell, which consisted only of brick walls and concrete ceiling and floor into the new chamber.

Works involved:

  • Erection of internal walls to form an AV/IT equipment room and store room
  • Installation of suspended ceilings and raised tiered floors along with wooden acoustic wall panelling
  • Creation of a mobile reception desk and link lobby from the chamber to the main council offices
  • Works to complete the unfinished toilet blocks and two ante rooms

The chamber was then fitted out with bespoke furniture and state-of-the-art audio visual technology. Live streaming footage of anyone speaking within the chamber is displayed on multiple monitors around the room and every council members microphone can be controlled from a central control panel at the head desk.

The completed chamber can host around 100 people and includes a large public viewing area, which is hoped will make council meetings far more accessible to the general public.

Borras worked with consultants Robert Noble Associates, Anthony J Silver & Associates and RPS Planning and Development to deliver the scheme which was completed on time and to budget.
