Royal Latin School

Buckingham, Buckinghamshire

CLIENT: Royal Latin School
ARCHITECT: GSS Architecture
QUANTITY SURVEYOR: GSS Architecture
VALUE: £910,000
CONTRACT PERIOD: 28 Weeks

This project saw our General Contracts team complete the redevelopment and extension of the Rotherfield Sixth Form Centre at Royal Latin School, a mixed state grammar school in Buckingham founded in 1423. The works, which were partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund formed phase 2 of the schools ambitious improvement plan to mark their upcoming 600 year anniversary.

The new build element of the programme involved the construction of a single storey extension within an existing courtyard to create a striking new main entrance to the Centre. A opening in an existing external wall and a new paved pathway leading to the building was also created.

Several existing internal walls were demolished and new openings formed to create a dramatically altered layout which now features breakout/study areas, toilets, an archive room, reception area, dining space and kitchen, I.T resource room and several classrooms. A full height glazed panel incorporated into the entrance, newly installed skylights and several new fire proof glass partitions combine to create light, open and flexible learning spaces for both independent and collaborative study.

Additional works included the refurbishment of existing timber sash windows, re-roofing works, creation of a external raised decking area, new ceilings, flooring and decoration throughout, mechanical and electrical renewal and the installation of new fire and security alarm systems.

During the construction phase our project staff and member from GSS Architecture, the architects for the scheme, held several supervised tours of the site. This not only allowed pupils the opportunity to view progress but also learn about the various careers in construction and how best to make a start in the industry.
