St Paul’s Cathedral School Boarding House
St Paul's, London
CLIENT: St Paul's Cathedral School
ARCHITECT: Kilburn Nightingale
QUANTITY SURVEYOR: Peter W Gittens
CONTRACT PERIOD: In Progress
Borras is proud to be appointed as the main contractor for another great project in the heart of London, this time at the prestigious and well known, St Paul’s Cathedral. This groundbreaking scheme will see the construction of a new boarding house for St Paul’s Cathedral choristers.
The Grade I/II listed site was built in the 1960’s, for just 40 children and residential staff. The school currently educates over 200 day pupils alongside the choristers and the well-being of all the children is compromised by the now cramped conditions. With demand for both day school places and choristership at a high, the introduction of a new boarding house will provide the adequate space needed, enabling the cathedral to maintain its exceptional choir.
The project is part of a large scheme and will include the creation of new classroom space, refurbished residential apartments and a redesign of the main playground. The approved design features three floors of accommodation above the playground on pillars. Two floors will be allocated to the choristers with a further floor accommodating boarding staff. The existing dining hall extension will be rebuilt, the roof will also be used as valuable and additional play space, connecting to the main playground via a steel and timber bridge.
The new buildings will be predominantly clad in Portland stone, echoing the 1960’s school buildings and St Augustine’s Tower, as well as St Paul’s Cathedral itself. The project will cost a total of £7.9m, with the new boarding accommodation set to open in September 2020.
