Leytonstone Library

Leytonstone, London

CLIENT: Waltham Forest Council
VALUE: £705,000

This project saw the interior of the existing library dramatically remodelled and modernised. The ground floor was transformed into an open plan ICT space with the main library, several study areas, staff offices and a children’s library on the first and second floor.

Borras worked closely with the British Heritage Trust throughout to ensure the heritage and integrity of the beautiful Grade II* listed building was not compromised. The refurbishment involved no demolition or new build construction works as the existing Art Deco features, structure and fabric of the building remained intact.

Works involved the installation of a new lift core, new ventilation and air conditioning throughout, extensive mechanical installation, including a new fire system and new lighting and refurbishment of existing glass sky lights.

Large amounts of existing wooden panelling, bookcases and furniture were also brought back to life through refurbishment and re-varnishing, special care was taken to ensure any new elements introduced complemented the buildings existing style, evidence by £21k being allocated to the production of new hand painted signage throughout the library.

Completed by our Special Works division in July the library was then fitted out before its opening at the end of August 2015.
