North Hertfordshire Museum

Hitchin, Hertfordshire

CLIENT: North Hertfordshire District Council
ARCHITECT: Buttress Architects
QUANTITY SURVEYOR: Appleyard & Trew
VALUE: £3,100,000
CONTRACT PERIOD: 82 Weeks

Originally constructed in 1901 Hitchin Town Hall is a grade II listed building in the heart of Hitchin Town Centre. This project, which Borras began in December 2013 involved the refurbishment of the existing building, expansion of the site and construction of a 3 storey extension to create a new museum.

Now complete, the building is split between the Town Hall and Museum. The museum half of the build was formed from the existing Gymnasium and Workman’s Hall buildings along with a new steel frame extension. Space for the prominent glass entrance was created through the demolition of two neighbouring properties (formerly high street shops).

Along with several large exhibition rooms the museum also features a cafe, kitchen, foyer shop, roof terrace and several activity rooms for educational and community use. The new museum combines the collections of the Hitchin and Letchworth Museums into one accessible North Hertfordshire Museum, providing far more space than was previously available to display the regions heritage.

The Town Hall section of the building now homes improved council offices, function rooms, storage spaces, toilets and a large balconied community hall.
